In just 5 hours and 33 minutes is kick-off for the first game of the FIFA World Cup 2006 in Germany, and I can’t wait. The weather is finally getting warm and there is an air of excitement throughout the country.
I will be celebrating the first day of the World Cup with my roommate, Jo, and friend in Stuttgart, at Jo’s parents’ house. The sad thing for Jo is, he has to go to a wedding here in Konstanz first, so won’t be arriving in Stuttgart until maybe the second half of the first game, in which Germany will be playing Costa Rica. (What a funny coincidence that my host country is playing Robyn’s host country in the first game.) I feel bad for Jo that he’ll be missing part of the game, but at the same time I wonder: what German in their right mind gets married on the opening day of the World Cup when Germany is hosting? The worst part is, the after-wedding dinner is planned for 6pm, the same time as kick-off! Insane, if you ask me. The World Cup comes only once every four years, and your country hosts it maybe once in a generation. You can have a wedding anytime, and if current trends continue, weddings are a dime a dozen anyway.
Anyway, as a precursor to the World Cup I am going to post some long overdue pics.
